City of Prince George – Community Forest
Trail Development
We provided forest management services to the City of Prince George to reduce the potential of wildfire entering the city following the mountain pine beetle epidemic. We were engaged in all aspects of community forest management from identifying high wildfire hazard risk areas to RESULTS reporting of areas treated under a Probationary Community Forest License.
The scope of our responsibilities included:
- Applying for funding under the UBCM "Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative" and the Service Canada "Job Creation Program".
- Preparation of Fuel Management Prescriptions outlining (i) overstorey trees to be removed, understorey trees to be spaced, and tree branches to be pruned; (ii) debris management techniques to be used such as mulching or chipping to minimize the fire hazard following treatment; (iii) public consultation strategies; and (iv) public safety measures to be employed during operations.
- Implementation of Operational Fuel Treatments that began with contractor selection, timber harvesting inspections, monitoring scale volumes, and collection of post treatment field data.
- Final reporting of fuel treatment outcomes, lessons learned, total area treated, person hours of those employed and project costs.
- Attendance at monthly meetings of the Prince George Community Forest Advisory Committee to report on progress made in the community forest.
- RESULTS reporting of completed harvesting and silvicultural activities.
